What makes ‘unPOP’ the best animation studio in Philadelphia, PA?
We love animation at unPOP! (Pete’s obsession began in childhood with classics like Clash of the Titans and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.) Animation can be found everywhere and is a perfect medium for our digitally centered lives. You can find it in: commercials, music videos, television shows, on websites, apps, in feature films, and of course on your social media feeds, many of these pieces do not appear animated at all at first glance.
What is Animation? Let’s look at 3 main styles of animation
- Stop Motion
We do a lot of stop motion animation at unPOP. We like it for a lot of reasons, but these are 2 that we think make it really great for advertising (especially social content):
It allows us to feature real products in our animations
It breaks from what viewers expect to see on all their screens. It has a tactile quality that we all long for in our media saturated day to day interactions.
We wanted to explain Stop Motion to You and Found this really nice explanation from DragonFrame
Stop motion animation is animation that is captured one frame at time, with physical objects that are moved between frames. When you play back the sequence of images rapidly, it creates the illusion of movement. If you understand how 2D drawn animation (think Bugs Bunny or Sponge Bob) works, stop motion is similar, except using physical objects instead of drawings.
The basic process of animation involves taking a photograph of your objects or characters, moving them slightly, and taking another photograph. When you play back the images consecutively, the objects or characters appear to move on their own.
You see stop motion animation all the time—in commercials, music videos, television shows and feature films—even if you don’t realize it. While it is common for people to think of stop motion as just one specific style, such as clay animation, the reality is that stop motion techniques can be used to create a wide range of film styles
- 2D Animation (cell and vector)
2D animation is the art of creating movement in a two-dimensional space. This includes characters, creatures, FX and backgrounds.
The illusion of movement is created when individual drawings are sequenced together over time (think Classic Disney or Looney Toons). One second of time is usually divided into 24 frames. Depending on the style of animation there can be as many as 24 unique drawings in one second of animation (24fps) or as little as two. Conventionally animation is done on "2s" meaning there is a drawing every 2 frames (12fps). This allows artists to save on production time/costs and gives 2D animation its unique look. 2D is a popular and diverse medium that's making a massive comeback. It can be seen prevalently in TV shows, video games, feature films, advertisements, mobile apps and on websites. Popular modern examples of 2D include TV shows Rick and Morty and F is for Family. Social media platforms like Snapchat have created a 2D animated series with snappy 1-3 minute episodes. And there's even been a recent surge in 2D platform video games such as Cuphead.
- 3D Animation
Toy Story, The Incredibles, Clippy (yeah, from Microsoft) are all examples of 3D animation.
In 3-D animation we use the computer to build the world and characters for the animation. It always sounds easier to use the computer. But it’s not necessarily easier or faster. The computer is just another tool and another style to consider.
Why Choose Animation?
- To capture and hold the attention of your target audience. Animation is eye-catching. The natural ability to capture a viewer’s attention means the company’s search engine optimization (SEO) will also go up due to increased traffic because of animations.
- Easier to communicate - As animation includes visual representation, it is easier to be communicated to a wider range of audiences. Viewers can understand the topic better and process it quickly (no need to turn on the sound).
- Enables deeper engagement - Animation can help a business establish a stronger connection with the viewer because of the viewer investment in the content. Viewers pause on animations, they share animations. Novelty helps draw and maintain attention.
- Cost-Effective - An animated video can easily be edited over time to create multiple pieces of content and can have a shorter production timeline. Hence, less money can be spent creating the video and more money can be used in marketing.
- Ability to be shared - Animated content is shareable plus most people find it entertaining. In a way, it also adds up to business branding via shareability.
